Tips

Horchata

Horchata is a quite popular drink in the region and city Valencia. Horchata you can drink in a Horchataría, during the summer months on the streets in Valencia, in the supermarket or you can ask in a bar if they got Horchata. Horchata is a drink that looks like milk, but it is made of a kind of nuts, water and sugar. Probably the best option is to try fresh Horchata in a Horchatería.

Museo de Bellas Artes de San Pío V

The museum is located next to the Turia park between the bridges “Trinidad” and “Real”.  In the museum “de Bellas Artes” you can not only find a large variety of paintings from the period 14th – 19th century, but also the building itself is worth to have a look at. The collection of historical paintings is the most important one of the region Valencia. The museum exists of an interesting permanent collection of paintings, but there are often also temporary expositions. The permanent collection exists of, among others paintings of Francisco Ribalta, Diego Velázquez, Antoon van Dyck, José de Ribera and Francisco de Goya and Lucientes.

In the museum there is also a “Cafetería”, where you can have a drink or something to eat. Furthermore there is a museum shop, where you can buy different souvenirs as postcards and posters with a picture of a painting on it.

IVAM “Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno”

The “Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno” or Modern Museum of Valencia is worth visiting if you are interested in a variety of diverse modern art. In the year 1984 the IVAM was established in order to highlight the characteristics of the modern and contemporary art. The collection exists of more than 10.000 artworks from the 20th century. There is also some special attention given to the origin of modern art. In the IVAM you can find a variety of styles, among others cubism, surrealism, and popart. There permanent collection of the IVAM is divided into 4 divisions, namely: photography, new media and installations, popart and abstraction.

Besides the permanent collection in the museum for modern art, there are regularly temporary expositions. Furthermore there are often activities organized as lectures, courses and workshops.

Museo Fallero

The Fallas, that take place in the month March, are the biggest celebration/party in Valencia. During the Fallas, everywhere you will be able to see Ninots/ Fallas. These are big sculptures that the Fallas associations (kind of carnival association) are making every year and showing them during the Fallas on the street. You are able to see these sculptures during 4 days and then they will all be burned, except 1. Only 1 Ninot will be saved every year. The Ninots that are saved are exhibited in the Fallero museum. If you would like to get an impression of these huge and beautiful sculptures, then a visit at the “Museo Fallero” can be recommended.

Museo Taurino

In the “Museo Taurino”, you can learn everything about bullfighting in general. Tourist bus

Are you visiting Valencia and would you like to see the highlights of this innovative city? Then you might take the Touristic Bus in Valencia.

A fun way to get an impression of the city of Valencia is to take the Touristic Bus. You can choose between 3 routes, namely Historic, Maritime and Albufera (a nature park close to Valencia).  The tour is available in 8 languages. If you buy a 1 day ticket, you can hop on and hop off at every Touristic Bus stop.

Tickets

There are different prices for different routes. The prices also depend on age, a 24 hour or 48 hour ticket, groups and residents. With the Valencia tourist card, you can get a discount. For the actual prices, you can have a look at Valencia Bus Turistic.

Tickets you can buy at every hotel in the city centre, but also at the tourist information, at the Touristic Bus and online on the website of the Valencia Bus Turistic. If you want to buy a ticket for the tourist bus in Valencia online, you have to keep in mind that the booking system is only available in Spanish.

Zoo

Playground Gulliver

The giant Gulliver is tied up on the floor and is laying in the Turia Park (at the end of “calle Peris y Valero”). You can enter this playground for free. There are various slides, climbing racks and often many children.

Midget Golf

Close to the playground Gulliver, there is a midget golf. You can get golf clubs and balls to play at the restaurant (next to the midget golf). If you want to get golf clubs and balls, you need a driver’s license/passport or €20 to pay as a guarantee. If you do not lose a club or a ball, the midget golf is for free.

Movie

In the Hemisfèric, that makes part of the City of Arts and Sciences, you are able to see different interesting movies on an IMAX screen. A few times a day, every day of the week, there are different movies. Family bicycle

What can be more fun than to make a tour, with a family bike (called cyclos) in the Turia park. These bikes, you can find in the Turia park, close to playground Gulliver. You can rent a bike for 2-3 or for 4-6 persons. For more information see Valenciabikes.

Science Museum

The Science museum isn’t only a place where you and your children can learn a lot about many things related to life science and technology, but it is also a lot of fun. In an interactive and fun way you learn a lot. For more information see Science museum.

Taurino Museum

The Taurino museum isn’t very big, but quite interesting. If you want to know more about bullfighting, the bullfighting area, bulls and various other related subjects, this museum is worth visiting. Lunch/dinner at 100 montaditos

At Plaza de la Reina, you can find 100 montaditos. This is a restaurant, where you can choose from 100 different kinds of small sandwiches. Furthermore, they also serve for example fries and salads. On the tables lay pens and papers and you have to fill in on a paper which sandwiches you would like to have. Also for children there are enough options they might like, as: a sandwich with tortilla de patatas, a sandwich with ham, a sandwich with cheese and of course fries.

Tips

• Spanish people are used to have dinner quite late. If your children aren’t used to have dinner late in the evening, you might want to choose the city centre to have dinner. In the city centre, several restaurants/tapasbars are open all day long or open early for dinner.

Restaurant Arribar has a large variety of rice and fish dishes, among others fish croquets, different kinds of Paella, and for example Dorado. This restaurant is located at the harbor where the America’s Cup Sail race took place. The owner of the restaurant also works in the restaurant and if you are lucky he sings some songs after lunch. You can sit inside or outside and you will have a very nice view over the harbor and the beach. The tables look great with the white table linen.

Recommendations

The Paella Valenciana is really worth trying, because it is one of the specialties of Valencia. Furthermore the sea bass in salt can be recommended.

Recommendations

You can choose to start with some tapas and then go for a main course. Due to that the tapas are that good, you might want to choose for only tapas. The homemade croquettes, the “Ensaladía Rusa” and the Steak Tartar are definitely worth trying. The fish in salt can be recommended as main course.

Description

Sagardi has got a large bar with many types of pinchos downstairs. Pinchos are a piece of bread with a topping on it. You can ask at the bar for a plate and you can get the pinchos you like. You have to keep the sticks, because if you want to pay, they count the number of sticks you have. On the first floor you have also the possibility to have dinner.

Description

TXOKO

Description

TXOKO is a nice Basque taberna which has a large variety of dishes, among others some typical Basque dishes.

Atmosphere

Due to the dark wooden tables and chairs, the light fall inside, the texts that are written on the windows and the ham, has TXOKO got a very cosy atmosphere. This taberna also exists of a big terrace with shadow during lunch. This is an ideal place to have lunch or dinner close to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.

Recommendations

Normally you can already see some fresh products demonstrated in the display window like fish and shell-fishes. Furthermore, a ración (a portion) of ham is definitely a recommendation. During the warm summer months you can also ask if they have gazpacho.

A Valencia Tourist Card is a card that could be interesting to buy if you are, more times a day, making use of the public transport in Valencia. During 1/2/3 days you can make unlimited use of the bus, metro or tram.

Where

You can buy a Valencia tourist card at one of the Tourist information points or at some kiosks. For example at Plaza de la Reina, Plaza Ayuntamiento, Train station North, the Airport etc.

What

There are many taxis in Valencia and not only tourists use a taxi, but as well many Valencian people. The color of the taxis is white.

Where

There are various places where you can find a taxi waiting in Valencia, but you can also call a taxi. Another way is to wave to a taxi that is driving. If it is not occupied, than it will stop for you. The taxis have a green light on their roof, if the light is on, it means that the taxi is free, if the light is switched off, than it means that the taxi is occupied. Especially in big streets you will see many taxis passing by.

Prices

Taxis use different rates, for example day/night/Sunday/holiday/outside the city Valencia. Depending on the day, the hour of the day and the distance, you will have to pay a certain amount of money. Taxi drivers are obliged to hang the taxi rates in the car, for example on a window or at the backside of a chair. There is a counter, where you are able to see the price.
